The farm of Afgoye
Initiation of agricultural productionThe visits by making two - three years ago jointly by members of "Una Scuola per La Vita Association" and the local partner "Madina Warsame Organization" in rural areas around Mogadishu, , in particular along the Shabelle River, which flows west of Mogadishu , have highlighted the plight of farming families whose production is strongly influenced by natural events and lack of agricultural knowledge.
From here is born the idea of expanding the range of the Association outside the capital, and in continuation to the remarks made by the association "Una Scuola Per La Vita” in Somalia in the field of education and training with the realization of a farm that represents a point of reference for the other farms and becomes the key of making contacts and lay the basis for achieving a future network of small farmers in order to reduce the economic gap and encourage one harmonious and equitable local development.
The farm is divided by the road between Balad and Afgooye:
- A large area to the east 55 hectares on the Shabelle River, that Madina Warsame Organization has developed different crops,
- To the west over an area of 7 hectares where there is a small village of farmers of a hundred inhabitants, providing the necessary labor to agricultural land across the street.
The overall objective is that the farm will become a center for technical assistance and technological experimentation that can provide consulting services to farmers operating in Somali territory. The aim is to encourage knowledge transfer and innovation and allow for economic development in Somalia, through direct advice to businesses and local farmers in business, technical and economic fields, spreading the culture of environmental sustainability in relation to agricultural production.
